County workers rake landscape area. TREES AND LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE

The Trees and Landscape Section of the Sacramento County Department of Transportation has primary County-wide responsibility for maintaining vegetation within the road right-of-way, including hedges, pedestrian walks, soundwall vegetation, landscape areas, bike lanes, and controlled areas.  Their primary purpose in doing so is to enhance public safety while promoting plant health and aesthetic appeal of those plantings.

Tree Trimming

It is the County policy to trim County trees in order to remove dead wood which creates a hazard to public or private property and citizens; to provide adequate clearance of roadways and walkways for the passage of persons and vehicles; and to remove visibility obstructions of street signs, traffic signals, street lights, and provide visibility at intersections.

Roadside Mowing and Herbicide Application

Trees and Landscape manages roadside vegetation for the purpose of enhancing public safety and preserving County assets.  All mowing and spraying is limited to Sacramento County Department of Transportation property or road right-of-way, unless specifically directed otherwise.

During late Spring, Summer, and early Fall, mowing is the primary method of vegetation control.  Herbicides are the primary method of weed control during late Fall, Winter, and early Spring.  Mowing is the preferred method of vegetation control when weeds have reached the vegetative state or are dying.
