Homeowners and business owners may petition the Board of
Supervisors for the formation of a street light assessment district. If the petition is granted, a
consulting engineer is hired to design the system, and a contract is let for the installation of the
street lights. The cost of forming the assessment district, designing the street light system,
installing the lights, and financing the installation is borne by the property owners and is
repaid over a number of years. Property or business owners who successfully form an assessment
district see TWO charges on their property tax bills, one charge for the street light assessment
district, and one for street light operation and maintenance
by the County.
