Streetlight in well landscaped area.STREET LIGHTS & HIGHWAY SAFETY LIGHTS

The Department of Transportation performs maintenance on street and highway safety lights in the County of Sacramento.  The maintenance, operation, and electrical cost of street and highway safety lighting is funded by County Service Area 1 (CSA 1).  Through CSA 1, property owners are assessed a direct levy on their annual property tax bill to maintain the lights.  CSA 1 provides funding for over 36,000 County maintained, and 2,300 Sacramento Municipal Utilities District (SMUD) maintained, street and highway safety lights in unincorporated Sacramento County, and in the cities of Elk Grove, Citrus Heights and Rancho Cordova.

Street Light Installation

In new developments lights are installed by developers as a condition of approval, and in established areas lights are installed and financed by the property owners or via an assessment or business improvement district established at the request of the property owner.

Highway Safety Light Installation

Highway safety light installations at intersections on major streets are accomplished  by the County of Sacramento. The Department of Transportation engineering staff assesses the proposed location. If the installation criteria are met, and funding is available, the department coordinates with SMUD to install the lights on existing utility owned poles.
