Curb, gutter and sidewalk in residential area.CURB, GUTTER AND SIDEWALK MAINTENANCE

Sacramento County's Curb, Gutter and Sidewalk Maintenance program identifies curbs, gutters and sidewalks that are in need of repair or replacement and develops a priority list for their inclusion.

Permanent Replacement vs. Temporary Repair

The Curb, Gutter and Sidewalk program has two facets: Permanent replacement and temporary repair.  Priority is based on such factors as severity of damage, the amount of pedestrian traffic, and the proximity to schools, parks, bus stops, and hospitals.

Defective residential curb, gutter, and sidewalks are prioritized by a computerized rating system.  Areas with sidewalks that have the highest numerical rating are inspected for any additional work that may not have been reported, and defective sidewalks in the immediate neighborhood are then included in the contract for replacement.

A "temporary sidewalk repair" is a ramp of asphalt placed on the defective sidewalk to eliminate trip hazards.  All sidewalks within the County right-of-way are eligible for temporary repairs whenever qualifying conditions are met.

Determining Eligibility

Damaged pavement must meet certain criteria to be added to the scheduled priority list.  Criteria includes:

  • Uplift or sag of 3/4" or more

  • Misalignment of 2 1/2" or more

  • Standing water of more than 1" deep for a distance of more than 10'

Elderly and Disabled Accessibility Project

The Elderly and Accessibility Project replaces curb, gutter and sidewalk with disabled ramps.  These ramps are installed at intersection corners, near schools, near hospitals, at driveways or any other curb, gutter, and sidewalk where accessibility could be improved.  Ramp need is determined by constituent request.
