FRANKLIN BOULEVARD BRIDGE REPLACEMENT
BAT PROTECTION PROGRAM

Part 1

CONTACTS AND COORDINATION

The proposed bridge replacement project is a joint project between Sacramento County and San Joaquin County. However, the wooden trestle bridge where the bats are located is entirely within Sacramento County. The project proponent is the Transportation Division of the Sacramento County Municipal Services Agency. Their engineering consultant is LoBuono, Armstrong & Associates. The County Department of Environmental Review and Assessment (DERA) acts as environmental consultant to the Transportation Division. DERA worked closely with several individuals and agencies in carrying out the first phase of this bat protection program. One individual, Mr. Dave Wyatt, Biology instructor at Sacramento City College, recognized for his expertise on bats by the California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) was consulted both during the design of the new bridge and during the first phase of the bat protection program. The CDFG was kept informed on all phases of the program, including visitation to the site. Staff of the Nature Conservancy's (TNC) Cosumnes River Preserve was consulted regarding the placement of the bat houses. DERA staff and TNC staff collaborated by sharing information regarding bat activities.

DERA and Tom Barnard of LoBuono, Armstrong & Associates consulted with Bat Conservation International (BCI) on a regular basis. Dr. Merlin Tuttle of BCI visited the bridge and Brian Keeley, BCI Director, has provided encouragement and advice.
