Sacramento Northern Bikeway Extension

Project Description

SACDOT has completed the construction within the former Sacramento Northern Railroad right-of-way in Rio Linda. This project has extended the Sacramento Northern Bikeway from M Street to Elverta Road. The project included the following improvements:

• Construction of 1.8 miles of Class I twelve-foot wide, paved bike trail.
• Landscaping enhancements.
• Improved access to bicycling and walking facilities.
• Paved and marked pathways from the bikeway to numerous locations in the community.
• New parking lot at the Elverta Road end of the project for the bike path users.
• Three new drinking fountains.
• Open-air kiosks were constructed along the bikeway to provide shaded areas.
• Wrought iron gateways were installed in various areas of the bikeway extension.
• This project extended the Sacramento Northern Bikeway from M Street to Elverta Road.

This project is part of implementation efforts for the Sacramento County Bikeway Master Plan.

Environmental Review, 2003 to 2005
Construction was completed in October 2006.

Funding

This project will be funded with 63% Federal grant money from the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Program and 37% of the road fund. Project costs are expected to be approximately $3 million.
