The Sacramento County Department of Transportation (SACDOT) is moving forward with development of a Pedestrian Master Plan (Ped-Plan) (20mb PDF) which establishes goals and strategies to increase pedestrian safety and improve walkability in the Sacramento County unincorporated area. Development of projects included in the Ped-Plan will enhance walking as a viable transportation alternative and help make Sacramento County a better place to live. Walkable communities add to personnel health and recreation, make neighborhoods more livable and help to reduce pollution.
The current status of Sacramento County’s Ped-Plan effort is described below:
- On April 25, 2006, SACDOT staff presented the draft Ped-Plan to the Board of Supervisors.
- The public comment period for the draft plan began April 25, 2006. Since then, community members have had the opportunity to provide emailed or written comments to Dave Franke (Project Manager).
- On March 20, 2007, the Board of Supervisors held a Public Hearing on the Status of the Ped-Plan. Major results of the Public Hearing include:
- The Board unanimously approved a motion to continue the item to their August 21, 2007 meeting, and to remove Ped-Plan sidewalk designations from the residential streets of the Arden Park, Arden Park Vista (Mariemont/Gordon Heights), Sierra Oaks, Sierra Oaks Vista and Garden of the Gods neighborhoods.
- The Board did not approve the removal of sidewalks from major streets in Arden Arcade, such as Watt Avenue, El Camino Avenue and Marconi Avenue.
- In addition, the final Ped-Plan will include a mechanism for residents living in these neighborhoods to request to have sidewalks installed for safety reasons on streets meeting certain criteria (i.e., schools).
- SACDOT staff is currently making revisions to the draft Ped-Plan to include Board of Supervisors direction provided at the March 20th public hearing, and comments and suggestions received through the extensive public outreach process.
- The draft EIR for the Ped-Plan is scheduled to be heard at the Project Planning Commission on September 24, 2007.
- The Department of Transportation requested the Board Presentation to adopt the Pedestrian Master Plan be continued from August 21, 2007, to November
27, 2007, in order to complete the environmental document. Adoption of the Final EIR, Improvement Standards and Final Ped-Plan is tentatively scheduled for that date.
