NEWS RELEASE May 17, 2006 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Dan Regan (916-874-7056) Communications & Media Officer Adopt-A-Street Program Kick-Off Event ~Community Partnerships for Cleaner Streets~ Sacramento, CA – Supervisor Roberta MacGlashan (District 4), and the Sacramento County Department of Transportation (SACDOT) are holding a kick-off event to announce startup of a new roadway litter cleanup program. The “Adopt-A- Street” program provides volunteer opportunities for individuals, organizations and businesses to collect litter and help cleanup sections of streets in the County unincorporated area. This program is modeled after similar efforts used by state and local governments throughout the country. The Orangevale Chamber of Commerce has volunteered to be the first organization to Adopt-A-Street (Greenback Lane – Filbert to Main) as part of this effort. Information about the event is as follows: Kick-off Event * Date/Time: Friday May 19, 2006, @ 10 A.M. * Location: Divine Savior Catholic Church (Parking Lot), 9079 Greenback Lane * Speakers Supervisor Roberta MacGlashan, District 4 Tom Zlotkowski, Director, Department of Transportation Reza Moghissi, Chief, Maintenance & Operations Chris White, President, Orangevale Chamber of Commerce According to Supervisor MacGlashan, “This is a great new community based program that will help address problems that most people are concerned about - littering and cleaner roads. The Adopt-A-Street program will enable SACDOT staff to work (MORE) cooperatively with volunteers to do something positive for the community in which they live and at the same time provide the County with a resource that will help keep our streets cleaner. The Orangevale Chamber of Commerce deserves much credit for offering to be the first organization to volunteer to adopt a roadway. We look forward to the success of this program, reduced littering and a cleaner Sacramento County.” Tom Zlotkowski, SACDOT Director added, “The Board of Supervisors strongly supports community based efforts like the Adopt-A-Street program and is always interested in making County roadways cleaner and more beautiful. The Adopt-A-Street program should also compliment recent efforts to reduce illegal dumping. This new roadway cleanup program is a “win-win” for the community and for Sacramento County”. Adopt-A-Street Program Benefits There are a number of benefits that Adopt-A-Street programs can provide to communities: * Neighborhood Pride: By volunteering to cleanup sections of roadway, citizens help create long-lasting change which fosters neighborhood pride and can help to increase property values. * Litter Removal: SACDOT currently contracts with the Sheriff’s Work Release Program for litter crews that cleanup between 800 to 1000 lane miles of roadway per year at an annual cost of $300,000. About 60 locations are cleaned up one to four times per year as part of this effort. If the Adopt-A-Street program is successful, it may be possible to increase the yearly cleanup frequency for these streets. * People Litter Less in Clean Neighborhoods: Seeing volunteers at work cleaning up streets may have an impact on would be litterbugs. It is our hope that streets cleaned by volunteers will see a reduction in littering. (MORE) How the Program Works The program involves SACDOT working with volunteer organizations, businesses or individuals to pick up litter on roadsides in the unincorporated area. Volunteers will be expected to: * Agree to pick up litter two to four times per year, along streets that may be as much as volunteers can control, but no less then 1/2 mile long. * Schedule cleanup dates. * Distribute safety equipment and trash bags. * Monitor volunteers during cleanup events. * Return an Event Completion Form by email, fax, or mail after each event. SACDOT coordinates the overall program and handles: * Provision of safety equipment. * Safety meetings for volunteers. * Installation of “Adopt-A-Street” signs recognizing volunteer organizations. * Provision of garbage bags, pickup and disposal of collected litter and other items after the events. Community Recognition An important aspect of the program is recognition for community organizations, businesses and/or individuals that donate time and effort to cleanup adopted streets. To show appreciation for these efforts, the County will install two Adopt-A-Street signs - one at each end of adopted street sections - to provide recognition for volunteers. Signs will display volunteer names and logos (If available). Volunteers will also receive a Certification of Appreciation.
