Hazardous Waste Spills

SACDOT crews respond only to Sacramento County unincorporated area hazardous waste spills that occur on roadway right-of-way.  Incidents involving hazardous waste typically include containers or materials that may pose an unnecessary risk that have been illegally dumped on or along the roadway, or vehicle accident scenes where a large amount of material has been released.

After the emergency phase of a hazardous waste incident has been responded to by Sacramento Metropolitan Fire and/or environmental management agencies, SACDOT responds to incidents to facilitate clean-up of hazardous materials.   For minor spills, leaks or ruptures involving known hazardous materials -- such as oil, automotive fluids, and paint -- SACDOT maintenance crews handle clean-up efforts.  For cleanup of hazardous materials that requires specialized equipment, protective clothing, training, and expertise, hazardous materials contractors are used to abate the hazard and restore the scene to a safe condition.
